Urgent relief requires for Yunnan earthquake victims
On 3rd August, a devastating 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Ludian in China’s Yunnan Province. The disaster has so far claimed the lives of 589 people and injured 2,401 more.
In addition, over 676,000 houses have been damaged, and approximately 229,700 people have had to be relocated. The situation is desperate, especially for children.
In the aftermath of the earthquake, the affected area and its communities are suffering from a lack of basic necessities, and it is currently focused on immediate relief efforts and the distribution of items such as tents, food, potable water and clothing. However, the needs of children – particularly their safety, hygiene, education, and hygienic kits for mothers – are not yet being directly addressed. Children do not have proper areas to play, learn or be taken care of. Also, almost 100 schools have been damaged with approximately 50,000 children affected in Ludian County, where the damage has been most severe.
Plan International works in several communities throughout Yunnan Province. Following the earthquake, Plan immediately deployed a rapid response team to the areas impacted by the earthquake. The response is being coordinated by the Central government, with international and local NGOs and relief agencies supporting these efforts.
Plan International urgently needs your support in raising HK$2,150,000 in donations to help those who have been impacted by the disaster. These funds will support the organisation’s efforts to provide relief kits for children and their families, establish 2 Child Friendly Spaces in the epicenter area, which will provide community-focused activities, and training to 3,400 children and their parents on issues including childcare and development, child protection and disaster risk reduction. The Child Friendly Spaces will serve as a temporary and transitional location for children to access a formal education, while the affected schools in the area are rebuilt.
