‘Because I am a Girl – Exposure Trip 2017’ held with success
In order to understand the dire situation of girls in low income countries, 12 Hong Kong youth participated in the 8-day “Because I am a Girl- Exposure Trip 2017” in the Philippines organised by Plan International Hong Kong, sponsored by the Home Affairs Bureau and the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education. The participants were provided an opportunity to engage in Plan International’s Real Assets for Improved Skills and Education (RAISE) project in Northern Samar. They also exchanged views on girls’ issues with local youth and filmed the discussions.
In the 8-day trip, the participants got to know more about RAISE. The project supports adolescent children from poor rural households who have dropped out of school or are at-risk of dropping out by providing them quality formal and alternative education opportunities to build critical life skills. The project has now reached more than 10,000 girls and boys (70% girls).
Participants visited several schools under Plan’s support to learn how RAISE helps local adolescent children.
The participants agreed that the trip was eye opening. Cassie, one of the participants said, “I acquired more knowledge on girls’ issues. Through visiting schools and rural households, I could witness the difficulties encountered by the local youth and got to know more about poverty and girls’ issues in the Philippines!”
The participant and local children participated in RAISE’s activities.
The last event of ‘Because I am a Girl – Exposure Trip 2017’, A Public Sharing and Short Film Screening-cum-Photo Exhibition, was held at Time Square on 4-5 March 2017.
A sharing session was held where the participants shared their experiences in the Philippines so as to raise public awareness towards girls’ rights. Dr. Darwin Chen, Board Members of Plan International Hong Kong, Ms. Kanie Siu, Chief Executive Officer of Plan International Hong Kong and Ms. Man Ka-lai, member of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education were there to show their support for the activity. Dr. Chen presented two awards to the participants with outstanding performances. Meanwhile, the behind-the-scene photos of the trip, documented by our volunteer photographer Mr. Tsang Wing Kai, were exhibited at the event.
