THE POWER OF GIRLS X MOVIES? Solidarity for Girls in Conflict!

About Girls Takeover

Since 2016, on the International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October, Plan International organised the Girls Takeover programme globally. We aim to give girls and young women a chance to take up decision-making and leadership roles so that they can explore and showcase their power and talents while advocating the rights other girls deserved and making lasting changes on the political, economic and social levels. In doing so, we aim to change perceptions around what is possible for girls and young women as decision makers, leaders and change-makers. Up to 2023, over 6,200 girls have participated in the campaign globally, empowering them to advocate for gender equality and the opportunity to create a better future.

Girls Takeover 2024 – “Girls in Conflict”

The world is facing the largest number of conflicts since World War II, and girls are disproportionately affected by conflict-related sexual violence and exploitation. On this year’s International Day of the Girl Child, Plan International launches a new global campaign “#UniteForPeace”, to call for everyone to come together with a joint voice for “Girls in Conflict”, and demand action to protect the rights of girls and all civilians amidst conflicts and humanitarian crises so that girls still have the opportunity to learn, lead, decide and thrive.

This year, we are honoured to collaborate with broadway cinematheque and MOViE MOViE, to offer a young woman leader a chance to design and host her own movie screening and panel discussion event, as well as curate the MOViE MOViE online movie channel. “Girls in Conflict” refers to the vulnerable girls affected by conflicts or violence. Through the power of movies, we aim to raise public awareness of this issue and encourage more to stand in solidarity with all girls and civilians affected by conflicts.

What to expect?
  • Two-way learning experience with the corporates
    • Gain real-life experience in the film industry – Job shadowing with senior leadership at broadway cinematheque and MOViE MOViE to learn about decision-making and strategic planning
    • Take over a senior leadership position and lead change – Share your knowledge and perspectives as a young woman with broadway cinematheque and MOViE MOViE, and advocate for positive change!
  • Leverage your influence and take action
    • Curate and host your own movie screening and post-screening sharing session, and design a thematic programme on the movie channel
    • Raise public awareness and advocate for the advancement of girls’ rights, particularly in the context of conflict
