Putting the Pieces of Life Together Again in the Philippines – With Your Help

In a country regularly ravaged by powerful typhoons, the arrival of Typhoon Hagupit, on the heels of the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan the previous year, wreaked more havoc on already battered communities.

Whilst timely and comprehensive emergency planning ahead of the typhoon’s landfall averted a disaster on the same scale, especially in loss of life, communities just emerging from the worst effects of Haiyan again suffered the destruction of their homes and livelihoods, with the best part of 1million families affected.

In the immediate aftermath, Plan was on hand with practical help such as providing hygiene kits, children’s shelters, tents etc.   Now, it is focussing its efforts on a relief, recovery and rehabilitation phase, estimated to last for five years.   Programmes will ensure that the children’s mental, physical and emotional well-being are secured, and are aimed at helping some 140,000 families in three provinces – Western Samar, Eastern Samar and Leyte – to recover their livelihoods as well as rebuild their homes.

Plan will continue with its efforts to introduce sanitation facilities, skills training programmes for young men and women, and sustainable micro-enterprises as well as educate communities on disaster readiness to raise the level of self-reliance and community responsibility.
